At present, members of the commission are 80 scholars who are researching the history of Hessian Jews in a wider regional context. Chairperson is Prof. Dr. Andreas Lehnardt.

The most important projects are

  • Editing of publications (Series "Schriften der Kommission für die Geschichte der Juden in Hessen")
  • Documentation of Jewish cemeteries in Hesse and their grave inscriptions
  • Project "Synagogues in Hesse"
  • Providing written sources in the State Archives of Hesse
  • Indexing of Jewish civil registers
  • Collection of literature about Jewish history in Hesse

Cooperation is fostered with other institutions involved in Jewish history: Historical commissions, State archives, State Offices for the preservation of historic buildings and for Geography / History of Hesse, the State Agency for political education, the Frankfurt Jewish Museum, the Fritz Bauer Institute in Frankfurt, and local researchers.

The commission is financially supported by the State of Hesse. The office of the Commission is located at the State Archives of Hesse in Wiesbaden.
